Introduction

[1983Dri] and [1985Dri] investigated alloys in the Mg-corner of the Mg-Gd-Y system, containing up to 21 mass% Y and up to 36 mass% Gd. The alloys were prepared from Mg of 99.95 mass% purity, Y of 99.83 and Gd of 99.92 mass%. The alloys were melted in an electrical furnace in Al2O3 crucibles. A mixture of chlorides was used for protection. Then the alloys were deformed to 50%, samples were cut and annealed in evacuated quartz ampules at 500, 400 and 300°C for long time. The investigations were carried out by differential thermal analysis, microstructure analysis, X-ray diffraction measurements, and electron microprobe analysis.
