The C-Cr-Ta ternary system is here critically assessed. No ternary C-Cr-Ta phase exists in the system and the (Ta1-yCry)C1-x carbide is the predominant phase, being in equilibrium with all the other phases except (Ta) at the solidus temperature. Isothermal and vertical sections, together with liquidus and solidus projections are here reported, after checking for data consistency and compatibility with the adopted binary subsystems. A complete reaction scheme is also proposed. Overall, no major contradictions exist among the experimental data, also showing good topological agreement with the available thermodynamic assessment.
