The interesting mechanical properties of ZrCo-ZrNi alloys have provoked detailed studies of phase relations in the Co-Ni-Zr system. Substitution of about 10 at.% Ni for Co in ZrCo was found to enhance the room temperature ductility in comparison with that of the ZrCo binary alloy [1974Hos, 1978Lal]. To establish the reason for that a number of studies including the investigation of the ternary phase diagram has been undertaken. Systematical studies [1974Hos, 1985Car1, 1985Car2, 1985Car3] on properties and phase relations in the ZrCo-ZrNi alloys revealed that substitution of Co with Ni along the section ZrCo-ZrNi produced not only essential ductility in the range 0-14 at.% Ni but a considerable hardness for the alloy with 14 at.% Ni. Alloys of 10-30 at.% Ni undergo transformation in the solid state, which according ...
