Introduction

The ternary system is the basis for many engineering alloys, such as grain refined cast Al-alloys, foil and sheet Al-alloy products for food packaging, capacitors, lithographic printing sheets, aluminization of steels, soft magnetic alloys for transformers etc. In addition, iron and silicon originating from bauxite ore and anode materials are present in nearly all industrial Al-alloys, and the metallurgical grade silicon contains, among others, aluminum and iron as impurities.
