[1993Pav] synthesized binary Li-Yb alloys by arc melting the pure components (Li with 98.2 mass% and Yb with 99.8 mass % purity) in purified argon at atmospheric pressure. The specimens were subsequently annealed at 200°C for 240 h in tantalum containers and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Complete immiscibility has been observed. The available information is given in Table 1. Contrary to [1993Pav], [1996Gan, 1998Gan] employing an empirical formula and considering a Yb2+ state for Yb, predicted compound formation in the Li-Yb system. No experimental check of that prediction was performed.
