For the Mg-Yb system a critical assessment exists from [1988Nay] essentially based on the early publication of [1965McM]. Since then the crystal structure of YbMg2 with the MgZn2-type has been confirmed from single crystal X-ray data [1996Ebn] (Table 1). YbMg2 was synthesized at 1.45 GPa in a belt-type apparatus heating a stoichiometric mixture in a closed Ta-crucible well above the melting temperature (1200°C) for 15 min followed by cooling to 650°C (20°C/min) with subsequent quenching to ambient conditions [1996Ebn].
