Introduction

There are numerous studies of the Al-Mo system. Early studies suffered from the lack of complete phase characterisation and thus correct identification of the structurally mostly very complex Mo-aluminides observed by the various authors, and the consequent ambiguity concerning the assignments of the registered phase transitions to specific invariant equilibria. This status was not overcome before Guinier XRD [1962Poe, 1991Sch], high resolution TEM [1975Ten, 1986Gue], and EPMA [1971Rex] were employed in combination with DTA on heating of well equilibrated samples [1971Rex, 1991Sch]. Thus, no accepted critical assessment exist for this system, because [1980Bre] predates the detailed study of the Al-rich part by [1991Sch], and [1997Sau] missed it.
